Last week, Mommy and I went to visit Nana so Nana could cut Mommy’s hair. Before Mommy picked me up from school she bought me a set of garden tools. I was so excited. There was a yellow shovel, a blue rake and a red hoe. I especially liked the hoe. These tools were big, too, almost as tall as I am.
I went outside with my new tools
I love to play in Auntie Margie’s back yard where Nana lives with her. They have a real garden where I help them pick tomatoes in the summer. While Nana and Mommy did funny stuff to Mommy’s hair, Quincy (Margie’s dog) and I went outside with my new tools to the garden. I shoveled and raked, but I mostly used the hoe. The dirt was nice and soft and already dug up and turned over. It was so fun! I worked and worked.
“I made a mistake. My shoes were muddy.”
When I got ready to go back inside, Mommy and Nana were busy and didn’t see me come in. I went over to them to tell them about all the work I’d done in the garden when I suddenly realized that I had very muddy shoes! I quickly turned around and went back to the porch and took them off. When I got back inside, I said to Mommy, “I made a mistake. My shoes were muddy.” Mommy and Nana looked up and there were muddy shoe prints all over the carpet. Nana said, “Oh, No!”
A family that loves me even when I make muddy prints
They got up to look at the carpet and Nana said, “It’s ok. We will vacuum it when it dries.” Mommy said it was ok, too, and that I did a good job to go back and take my shoes off outside. Nobody yelled at me for my mistake. I am so glad I live in a family that loves me even when I make muddy prints on the carpet. That makes it a lot easier to own up to my mistakes. I think that’s how God is—He loves us so much.
Later while Mommy had that funny hat on her hair, Nana washed my shoes. I got the hand mirror and held it up for Mommy to see how funny she looked. We laughed and laughed.
Thank you, Jesus, for a Mommy who knows your grace.
(Obviously Ryan didn’t write this, but I think this is the message he got in his little heart. And the blessing I received was the next day when I realized that neither my daughter nor I blew up over muddy foot prints. That’s not to say we never have, but it warmed my heart to know that my grandsons are growing up in a home that has a loving, kind, & gracious Mommy & Daddy.)
